Advice from Regeneron Science Talent Search Alumni: Why You Should Apply
The Regeneron Science Talent Search (Regeneron STS) 2026 application is officially open! Each year, America鈥檚 oldest and most prestigious science and math competition invites high school seniors to present their original research and share their thirst for scientific discovery.
If you鈥檙e unsure about applying, you鈥檙e not alone. Many past finalists once wondered if they were ready and if it would be worth the work.
Today, they all say the same thing. Just go for it!
Kevin Shen, who came in seventh place last year, won a $70,000 award for a project on improving fuel efficiency by building a 3D-printed airplane with oblique wings. His oblique-wing aircraft and computer improved flight efficiency by 9.2%. Even with such impressive results, he spent months wondering if he should apply. 鈥淚 even ended up deciding not to. It was only when a previous finalist convinced me to apply at the last minute that I gave it a shot, and it was likely the most 鈥榳orth-it鈥 decision I鈥檝e ever made,鈥 said Kevin Shen. 鈥淵ou only have one chance to experience STS, so don鈥檛 regret not 补辫辫濒测颈苍驳!鈥
A common theme among STS finalists is to let your true passions come through both your work and application. 鈥淧ick a project that truly excites you; something you can鈥檛 stop talking about. Show your personality in your essays, and don鈥檛 be afraid to let your curiosity and enthusiasm shine,鈥 said Charlotte Rosario.
Others stressed persistence, planning as well as storytelling. 鈥淪cientific research is hard. My journey was filled with failure, but persistence, curiosity and an open mind will push you through,鈥 said Minghao Zou. 鈥淢ake your research sound like a story, because it is!鈥 added Siddharth Nirgudkar. 鈥淭alk about the challenges, the days when you struggled, the days when you suddenly got a new idea, and the days you finally got the results!鈥
Above all, finalists encourage applicants to be confident and believe in the power of their work. 鈥淪ubmit your research whether you think it will be recognized or not,鈥 said Vishwum Kapadia. 鈥淢ost likely, your ideas and discoveries are relevant and impactful, and the application experience will make you a stronger person in the long run.鈥
